X post about Dr. Herman Pontzer

Americans are actively trying to lose weight.

And they gain it back despite making temporary improvements.

This Harvard anthropologist say's he knows exactly why.

Here are 7 metabolism myths keeping you fat (#4 will surprise you):

Dr. Herman Pontzer is an anthropologist & metabolism researcher.

For one of his studies, he worked with hunter-gatherers––a Tanzanian tribe known for walking 10+ miles/day.

What he discovered completely changed our understanding of human metabolism.

Here are the 7 findings:

1. Exercise doesn't burn extra calories

Your body has a fixed energy budget.

When you exercise, it doesn't spend more.

It just moves it around by saving on immune function, cellular repair, and other vital processes.

Here's an example: a video link to Hadza community in Tanzania

Marathon runners don't burn twice your calories.

They just allocate energy differently.

That's because our bodies are made to maintain energy levels stable, no matter how much we move.

The takeaway? Exercise for health, not calories.

2. Starving won't cut weight

Our bodies are way too smart to fall for that.

When they sense starvation, they reduce calorie burn and break down muscle to preserve energy levels.

That's why 10-20% calorie reduction (not starvation) is a better alternative for losing weight.

3. Frequent meals don't speed up metabolism

Dr. Pontzer's found our body doesn't care if we eat 2 or 6 times/day.

That's because it operates on total calories, not meals.

What matters is WHAT we eat, not when.

4. Metabolism doesn't slow down with age

In fact, it stays fairly stable from 20 to 60.

Why? Because age isn't the determining factor.

It's the muscle loss, less movement, and poor sleep that slows it down.

A healthy lifestyle is still the best way to fight age.

5. Men don't burn more calories than women

Gender doesn't matter. It all depends on muscle mass.

Dr. Pontzer compared men and women with same muscle mass & activity level––The calorie burn was almost identical.

It's body composition that determines metabolic rate.

6. "Fat-burning" foods don't exist

Some foods are marketed as "metabolism-boosting":

Green tea, chili peppers, apple cider vinegar...

But the effect is way too small for meaningful weight loss.

The alternative? Just eat more protein (takes 30% more energy to digest).

7. Your metabolism isn't fixed

There's many ways to speed it up.

• Every lb of muscle burns 6-10 calories daily • Protein burns 30% of its calories during digestion • Even sleep quality can boost your metabolism by 20%

So how do you do that?

By fixing your habits:

• Lift weights 3x per week • Sleep 7-9 hours consistently • Drink 3-4 liters of water daily

Metabolism is formed by lifestyle. Not genetics.
